Most modern gas furnaces use a hot surface igniter that lights the burner. Igniters fail after roughly 5 to 7 years of cycling and present as a furnace that ignites on every third or fourth try, then stops igniting at all. Replacement is a 1 to 2 hour job and the part typically runs $60 to $150.
The flame sensor confirms the burner has lit. A sensor coated with combustion residue cannot detect the flame and tells the gas valve to shut off, causing short-cycling. Cleaning the sensor solves this in 30 to 60 minutes.
The inducer motor pulls combustion gas through the heat exchanger and exhausts it through the flue. A failing inducer makes a rattle or squeal and trips the pressure switch. Replacement runs 2 to 3 hours and the part typically $200 to $450.
